Rep. Matt Gaetz, a Republican from Florida, has initiated a vote to remove Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his leadership role in the House of Representatives, AP News reports.
Gaetz introduced a resolution to declare the Speaker’s office vacant, setting the stage for a vote that must occur within 48 hours.
This is an unprecedented move and the first time in over a century that a lawmaker has attempted to use this motion to remove a Speaker.
McCarthy has faced opposition from far-right Republicans after he recently relied on Democrats’ votes to pass a government funding bill.
