US Government Shutdown Averted with Short-Term Deal

US President Joe Biden has signed a last-minute temporary funding bill to avert a federal government shutdown, AP News reports.

The package dropped the $6 billion in aid to Ukraine but increased federal disaster assistance by $16 billion.

The bill, which funds the government until November 17, was approved by the House 335-91 and the Senate by an 88-9 vote.

Speaker Kevin McCarthy had to rely on Democrats to pass the bill, as far-right Republicans opposed any short-term funding measure.
