US soldier Pvt. Travis King, who crossed into North Korea two months ago, has been released and is returning to the United States, AP News reports.
On Wednesday, North Korea suddenly announced its decision to expel King with Sweden and China assisting in the transfer.
The reason for King’s release remains unclear, but officials suspect that he had no significant value in terms of leverage or information due to his low-rank.
King, who had been declared AWOL from the Army, will undergo psychological assessments and debriefings upon his return.
