An earthquake of magnitude 6.8 has struck Morocco, the strongest to hit the North African country in 120 years, AP News reports.
The death toll exceeded 2,000 people and is expected to rise as rescuers struggle to reach remote and hard-hit areas.
The quake also caused widespread devastation to mountainous villages and historic sites, including the Koutoubia Mosque.
The earthquake’s impact was felt in neighboring countries like Portugal and Algeria.
