France to Ban Wearing Abaya Dress in Schools

France is set to ban children from wearing the abaya, a full-length robe worn by some Muslim women, in state-run schools, Al Jazeera reports.

France has a strict policy on religious signs in public education, which includes large crosses, Jewish kippas, and Islamic headscarves.

In 2004, France banned headscarves in schools, and full-face veils were prohibited in public spaces in 2010.

France maintains a strong commitment to secularism in order to preserve the separation of religion and the state.
