Ecuadorians have voted against oil drilling in block 43, a protected area of the Amazon located within Yasuni National Park, AP News reports.
With over 90% of the ballots counted, about six in 10 Ecuadorians voted in the referendum to reject oil exploration in the region.
Yasuni National Park is home to indigenous tribes and rich biodiversity, the region was designated a world biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1989.
State oil company Petroecuador, which produces almost 60,000 barrels a day, will be required to cease operations in Block 43 in the coming months.
