Singapore Executes Woman for the First Time in 20 Years

Singapore has executed Saridewi Djamani, the first woman to face capital punishment in almost 20 years, The Guardian reports.

The 45-year-old Singaporean national was sentenced to death in 2018 for trafficking around 30g of heroin.

Her execution comes amid protests from human rights groups, including the Global Commission on Drug Policy and Amnesty International.

The Singaporean government argues that the death penalty is an effective deterrent against drug-related crime.
