Belarus Sentences Nobel Peace Prize Winner Ales Bialiatski to 10 Years in Prison

A Belarusian court has sentenced last year’s Nobel Peace Prize winner Ales Bialiatski to 10 years in prison, reports Russian media according to Reuters.

Bialiatski, 60, and two of his associates were charged for having smuggled money into Belarus and for having financed demonstrations.

The human rights activist denies the charges against him and believes he is prosecuted for political reasons.

Bialiatski was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize together with the Russian human rights organization Memorial and the Ukrainian human rights organization Center for Civil Liberties.
