On Saturday, 12 cheetahs were flown from South Africa to India as part of a new project to reintroduce the species in the country, according to BBC.
The cheetahs will be taken to Kuno National Park and join eight other cats sent to India from Namibia. India plans to import twelve cats annually for the next ten years, according to AP.
The cheetah populations are declining in most parts of the world, except in South Africa. Today there are fewer than 7,000 adult cheetahs worldwide.
The Asiatic cheetahs was declared extinct in India more than 70 years ago.
