5 Memphis Police Officers Charged with Murder in Tyre Nichols’ Death

Five former police officers have been charged with second-degree murder in the arrest and death of 29-year-old African American Tyre Nichols.

On January 7, Nichols was stopped and brutally beaten by police for alleged reckless driving in Memphis, Tennessee. Nichols was hospitalized, but died three days later.

Last week, the five officers, who are all black, were fired after an investigation found them “directly responsible for the physical abuse of Mr. Nichols”.

The officers have been charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression.

US President Joe Biden called for “peaceful protest” as authorities prepare to release the footage on Friday evening local time.
