On Wednesday, Germany and the US announced that they would send advanced battle tanks to Ukraine, as the Russian invasion enters its 12th month.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has agreed to send 14 Leopard 2 A6 tanks, while US President Joe Biden said the US will send 31 M1 Abrams tanks.
Germany’s announcement means that several other European countries with Leopard 2 tanks could potentially supply some from their stock to Ukraine.
The tanks “will burn down just like all the other ones. … Except they cost a lot, and this will fall on the shoulders of European taxpayers.”

Scholz had insisted that the decision to supply tanks to Ukraine had to be made jointly with the US, to share the risk of any backlash from Russia.
