Thunberg was detained while protesting at the Garzweiler 2 coal mine, 9 km away from the village of Luetzerath, which is set to get demolished to make way for a coal mine expansion.

Energy company RWE and the German government has agreed to the demolition of the village Luetzerath in exchange for a faster exit from coal and sparing five other villages.

Thunberg was removed from the edge of the mine by three police officers, but was later released after an identity check, according to the police.
