Moore County, North Carolina, declares a state of emergency after a “deliberate” attack from gunfire damaged two substations cutting power for nearly 45,000 people.
“We are working with energy companies in local communities to address the situation impacting the power that reaches homes in the targeted neighborhoods. The question is, is it an act of malfeasance or otherwise? Early evidence suggests that it was deliberate. And the investigation is underway.”
– Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security
On Saturday, power outages were reported and utility companies found evidence that the damage was caused by gunfire.
Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields said the attack was intentionally carried out by a person(s) who “knew exactly what they were doing,” motive remains unknown.
On Monday, a spokesman for Duke Energy said the company had restored power to 7,000 customers, but 38,000 remain without power.
