The European Commission has approved France’s move to abolish short haul domestic flights between cities that can be reached by train in under 2.5 hours.
Initially, the ban will only affect three routes between Paris Orly and Nantes, Lyon, and Bordeaux, since they have real train alternatives in places.
“[This] is a major step forward in the policy of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. I am proud that France is a pioneer in this area.”
– Clément Beaune, Transport Minister
France will also no longer tolerate that the super rich can fly with private jets, while the general public makes sacrifices to address the energy crisis and climate change.
However, it is unlikely to impose a total ban on jets, the more likely measure would instead be to introduce heavy taxation and restrictions.
France is also incentivizing people with a €4,000 subsidy to trade in their cars for electric bikes to catch up with the bike-loving Dutch, Germans and Danes.
