US Supreme Court Clears Way for Lawmakers to Obtain Trump’s Tax Returns

On Tuesday, the US Supreme Court cleared the release of former President Donald Trump’s tax returns to a congressional committee after a three-year legal fight.

The committee sought six years of Trump’s tax records from 2015 to 2020, but the Treasury had refused to provide the records during Trump’s presidency.

The Biden administration said federal law is clear and the committee has the right to examine any taxpayer’s return, including the president’s.

The Lower courts agreed and rejected Trump’s claim that the committee had exceeded its authority just to make the documents public.

The committee will have little time to complete its work related to the returns before a narrow Republican majority will takeover the House in January.
