The Republican Party have regained control of the US House of Representatives, after securing the 218 seats required to win a majority.
On Tuesday, Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy was nominated as the next House speaker when the new Congress convenes early next year.
In the US, a bill must pass both the House and Senate and be approved by the president to become law. Control of the House will allow Republicans the power to block new legislation.
It also enables the Republicans to launch congressional investigations against the president’s son, Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings, or dismiss the Capitol Riot Investigation.
The Democratic Party retained control of the Senate after securing re-elections in Nevada and Arizona, and flipping Pennsylvania.
