The world’s population has reached eight billion people, the growth is due to improvements in public health, nutrition, personal hygiene and medicine, according to the UN.
Most of the growth comes from middle-income countries in Asia, where it has increased by around 700 million people since 2011.
India grew by around 180 million people and is expected to overtake China as the world’s most populated country next year.
Some of the world’s poorest nations in the sub-Saharan Africa region, also saw a spike in population due to higher fertility rates.
However, developed regions like the US, Europe, and Japan has seen a steady decline in birth rates.
China is also struggling due to the legacy of its One Child Policy program and is now urging families to have a second or a third child.
Since 1800, the global population has grown due to the development of modern medicine and the industrialization of agriculture, which secured global food supplies.
The UN projects the world’s population will grow to 8.5 billion in 2030 and 9.7 billion in 2050, before peaking at 10.4 billion people in the 2080s.
