On Thursday, a federal judge in Texas ruled that the Biden administration’s student loan relief program was unlawful and must be vacated.
US District Judge Mark Pittman ruled that the HEROES Act did not authorize the $400 billion student loan forgiveness program.
The HEROES Act is a law that provides loan assistance to military personnel and was relied upon by the Biden administration to enact the relief plan.
In August, the Biden administration unveiled its student loan relief plan, to cancel $10,000 in student loans and up to $20,000 for Pell Grants applicants.
The program has been subject to several lawsuits, but the plaintiffs have been unable to convince courts they were harmed by it in a way that gives them the right to sue.
