On Saturday, hundreds of environmental activists stormed an area holding private jets at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, stopping the aircrafts from leaving.
“We want fewer flights, more trains and a ban on unnecessary short-haul flights and private jets.”
– Dewi Zloch, Greenpeace Netherlands Campaign Leader
Demonstrations organized by Greenpeace and Extinction Rebellion, took place in and around the airport in anticipation of the COP27 climate talks in Egypt.
The activists accuse Schiphol to be the Netherlands’ largest producers of carbon dioxide emissions, claiming it emits 12 billion kilograms annually.
Military police removed the protesters in buses, arresting more than 100 activists, according to national broadcaster NOS.
In response to the protest, Schiphol claims it aims to become an emissions-free airport by 2030, and supports the aviation industry’s target of net zero emissions by 2050.
