At least 141 people have died and 177 people rescued, when a pedestrian suspension bridge collapsed during Diwali celebrations in India’s western state of Gujarat.
The Morbi bridge (230m) on the Machchu river locally known as Julto Pul (swinging bridge) was a popular tourist attraction built in the 19th Century under British rule.
The bridge recently finished repairs and reopened just a week before the incident, when it became overcrowded as people celebrated the Diwali festival.
Gujarat is the home region of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was “deeply saddened by the tragedy” and has announced compensation for the families of victims.
