Mexico Mayor and 17 Others Killed in Town Hall Massacre

On Wednesday, gunmen killed the former mayor of San Miguel Totolapan in western Mexico, before storming the town hall killing at least 17 others.

Mayor Conrado Mendoza Almeda’s father, former mayor Juan Mendoza Acosta, was killed in his home before the armed men attacked the town hall.

Up to 18 police officers and council workers were killed in the massacre and three others wounded, according to Guerrero’s attorney general.

Large vehicles had apparently blocked the highway in the state of Guerrero, to prevent security forces from reaching the city.

The attack has been blamed on the Los Tequileros criminal gang, with ties to the drug cartel. However the motive remains unclear, but killings of local officials are not uncommon.
