On Friday, the Russian ambassador told the UN Security Council that the US has much to gain from the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipeline under the Baltic Sea.
At a council meeting addressing the recent leaks of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, Russian ambassador Vassily Nebenzia accused the US of having much to gain from the incident.
She claims that American liquefied natural gas (LNG) suppliers would celebrate the destruction of the pipelines and the increase in energy exports to Europe.
The White House dismissed the accusation it was responsible.
“Let me be clear, the United States categorically denies any involvement in this incident and we reject an assertion saying the contrary.”
– Richard Mills, US Deputy Representative to the United Nations
In 2006 and 2008, similar gas pipeline sabotage incidents occurred in Georgia by Russia, resulting in the suspension of gas supplies to Georgia.
