Coradia iLint, the first fully hydrogen-powered passenger train service built by Alstom, is now up and running on the line in Lower Saxony, Germany.
The only emissions the train produce are steam and condensed water, and it operates with a minimal level of noise, according to Alstom.
This week, five of the trains will be operational, while an additional nine will be introduced in the upcoming months, replacing 15 diesel trains.
The Coradia iLint has a range of 1,000 kilometers and one tank of hydrogen is sufficient to power the train for the whole day.
Alstom has a contract to deliver 27 trains to the Frankfurt metropolitan area and two other contracts for regions in Italy and France..
