Later this year, United Launch Alliance will launch a Vulcan Centaur rocket carrying the ashes of the late "Star Trek" actress Nichelle Nichols into space.
On July 30, Nichols passed away at the age of 89, best known for her role of Lt. Nyota Uhura in the "Star Trek" series from 1966 to 1969 and the films from 1979 to 1991.
Her ashes will travel aboard the first Celestis Voyager Memorial Spaceflight, which will take off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and travel into interplanetary deep space.
She will be joined by the ashes of "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry; his wife, Majel Barrett-Roddenberry; and James Doohan, who portrayed Montgomery "Scotty" Scott.
Celestis, Inc., is a private company that conducts memorial spaceflights carrying DNA or creamted remains for a starting price at $12,500.
Celestis will also offers shoter voyages that don't travel as far, but can cost less than $5,000.
