On Sunday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced that Singapore will repeal Section 377A of the penal code, a colonial-era law that criminalizes sex between men.
However, the legal definition of marriage as being between a man and a woman remains the same.
Under Singapore's Section 377A, offenders can face up to 2 years jail for gay sex, it does not include sex between women. However, the law has not been actively enforced for decades.
In February, the highest court in Singapore ruled that since the law was not being enforced, it could not be used to prosecute men for having gay sex.
On Sunday, a coalition of more than 80 churches voiced their opposition to the decision, including Muslims, Catholics and some Protestants.
It was unclear on the precise date that Section 377A would be repealed.
