In the past four years, almost all sea turtles born on the beaches of Florida have been female, according to scientists.
"As the Earth experienced climate change, increased temperatures could result in skewed and even lethal incubation conditions, which would impact turtle species and other reptiles."
- The National Ocean Service
If a turtle's eggs incubate below 27°C, the hatchlings will be male, while above 31°C, the hatchlings will be female. Temperatures that waver between the two will result in a mix.
Due to rising temperatures, the beach sands of Florida where the eggs incubate has risen to above 31°C, resulting in mostly female baby turtles.
