Meta Sued for Giving US Hospitals Tracking Tool to Access Patients’ Data for Ads

Last week, a new lawsuit alleges that Meta has used people's medical data without permission for targeted adverts on Facebook.

It is the second recent lawsuit accusing US hospitals of breaching HIPAA by sharing sensitive patient data with Meta.
The complaint alleges that these hospitals used Meta Pixel, a tool that allows
Meta to access sensitive health data and then sell it to Facebook advertisers.

In June, an investigation by nonprofit newsroom The Markup revealed that 33 of the top 100 hospitals in America use Meta Pixel.
According to the suit, an individual was served targeted ads for her heart and knee conditions based on her hospital patient portal at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center.
