Las Vegas has declared an emergency over its water supply after the largest wildfire in New Mexico history, contaminated the Gallinas River.
The city relies solely on water from the river, which has been tainted by the Calf Canyon-Hermits Peak Fire with large amounts of debris and ash.
The city now relies on reservoirs that, which contain less than 50 days worth of water reserves, according to Las Vegas Mayor Louie Trujillo.
The governor of New Mexico, Michelle Grisham, said in a tweet that the state has allocated $2.25 million to guarantee citizens have access to clean drinking water.
On April 27, the Hermit's Peak Fire and Calf Canyon Fire merged.
On May 4, President Joe Biden issued a major disaster declarations for the New Mexico counties of Colfax, Mora and San Miguel.
