On Friday, Japan's former prime minister Shinzo Abe died in hospital after being shot at a political campaign event.
Abe was shot at twice while holding a speech on a street in the city of Nara. He suffered two bullet wounds to his neck and heart.
No vital signs were detected by the time the 67-year-old Ex-PM was transferred for treatment after receiving a blood transfusion in hospital.
Security officials subdued the gunman, a Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, with a homemade gun, currently in police custody.
The suspected shooter admitted to shooting Abe and told officers he had a grudge against a specific group he believed Abe was connected to.
The suspect previously served in Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force (Navy) and retired from active duty in 2005, according to local reports.
Abe, was Japan's longest-serving prime minister and served in 2006 for a year and again from 2012 to 2020, before stepping down due to health reasons.
While in office, he promoted policies on defence and foreign policy and long tried to change Japan's pacifist post-war constitution.
