In 1869, the Supreme Court ruled in Texas v. White that states cannot unilaterally secede from the Union.
Texas proclaimed its independence from Mexico in 1836 and was its own nation for nine years, until joining the US.
Texas later seceded from the Union in 1861, before being readmitted following the end of the Civil War in 1870.
