Japan Makes Cyberbullying Punishable by One Year in Prison Following Death of Reality TV Star

On Monday, Japan's parliament passed legislation making "online insults" punishable by imprisonment.

Offenders found guilty of online harassment may face up to a year in prison or a fine of 300,000 yen ($2,200).

The current punishment is fewer than 30 days or a fine of up to 10,000 yen ($75).
The issue of online harassment gained prominence, following the death of professional wrestler and reality television star Hana Kimura.

Kimura, 22, known for her role in the Netflix show "Terrace House," died by suicide in 2020.

Many believe the main cause to be cyberbullying from social medie. Other cast members came forward to share their own experiences of online abuse.
The bill proved controversial in the country, with opponents claiming it may impede free speech and criticism of the establishment.
